Reactive Dogs: Where Nutrition Fits in a Behavior Plan

Reactivity is an over-the-top response to a specific trigger — lunging, barking, or freezing at another dog, a bicycle, a man in a hat. It is not aggression, though it often looks alarming, and it is not disobedience. Nutrition plays a supporting role in managing it: food affects arousal, recovery, and the quality of the training currency you carry. What makes a good training treat for a reactive dog?

Value and speed, above all else. A dog working near threshold will refuse mediocre food, and treats that take twenty seconds to chew break the rhythm of a counterconditioning session.

Will neutering reduce my dog's reactivity?

How long does a reactive dog take to improve?

Measurable progress usually takes three to six months of consistent work, and setbacks are part of the pattern rather than a sign of failure. Should I use a head halter or a front-clip harness?
