Can Dogs Eat Rice When They Have Loose Stool?

Aug 25, 2026

The direct answer

Plain white rice, boiled in water with nothing added, is one of the standard bland foods owners reach for during a bout of loose stool, and it is safe for most dogs. It is easy to digest and gentle, though it contributes almost no fiber, so it softens the workload on the gut rather than changing stool consistency directly. Use it for two or three days at most. Loose stool that lasts beyond a day or two, or comes with vomiting, blood or a flat, tired dog, is a call to the vet rather than a rice question.

Why rice, and not something else

White rice has had the bran and germ stripped away. What is left is starch that breaks down quickly and asks very little of an irritated digestive tract. That is the whole appeal. It sits quietly.

Brown rice is the more nutritious grain on paper, and the wrong choice here. The bran layer that makes it healthier also makes it harder work for a gut that is already unhappy.

How to cook it

Rinse the rice, then boil it in plain water with roughly twice the usual water so it comes out soft and slightly overcooked. No salt, no butter, no broth, no bouillon cube. Chicken stock from a carton usually carries onion powder, which is a reason to skip it.

Let it cool to room temperature. A hot bowl on an already queasy stomach helps nobody.

The classic bland ratio

Most bland-diet instructions land around two parts rice to one part plain protein, usually boiled skinless chicken breast or lean ground beef with the fat drained off. Some vets prefer three to one on the rice side for a dog with a very reactive gut.

Feed it in small, frequent portions instead of two large meals. Four small servings across the day is easier on the system than the usual schedule.

How long to keep a dog on it

Two to three days, then start folding the regular food back in over another two or three. A bland diet is not complete nutrition, and running it for a week or more starts creating a different problem. Your veterinarian is the one to ask about extending it, especially for a puppy, a senior, or a dog with any ongoing condition.

Rice compared with the other bland-diet staples

What rice does not do

Rice adds no meaningful fiber. Soluble fiber is the fraction that absorbs water and gives stool form, which is why owners who use rice alone often report a dog that is comfortable but still producing something formless.

That is where a soluble fiber source earns its place next to the rice. Firm Up delivers pumpkin's soluble fiber as a dried concentrate, measured in scoops rather than cups, and pumpkin has long been the vegetable owners reach for on that front. The wider Super Snouts collection includes options aimed at the microbiome rather than the fiber alone. The AKC's piece on fiber in a dog's diet explains the soluble and insoluble split clearly.

Fasting first: ask, do not assume

Older advice told owners to withhold food for twelve or twenty-four hours before starting rice. Thinking has shifted, and short fasts are no longer a blanket recommendation, particularly for puppies, toy breeds and dogs with any metabolic condition. Ask your clinic what they want for your specific dog before skipping meals.

Water is a different matter. Keep it available the entire time.

When loose stool is not a diet problem

Parasites, a swallowed sock, a dietary indiscretion in the trash, pancreatitis, a diet change made too fast, stress from boarding, and a long list of medical causes all present as loose stool. Rice does not distinguish between them. A dog under six months, over ten years, or one already being treated for something should be seen sooner rather than later.

Watch for black tarry stool, fresh blood, repeated vomiting, a painful abdomen, pale gums or a dog that will not stand up. Any one of those is an emergency, not a bland-diet situation.

Coming off the bland diet

Mix a quarter of the regular food into the rice on day one of the transition, half on day two, three-quarters on day three, and back to normal on day four. Sudden returns to full kibble are a common reason a dog relapses. The WSAVA nutrition guidelines are a useful reference on why gradual change matters.

FAQ

How much rice for a dog with diarrhea?

Roughly a quarter cup of cooked rice per ten pounds of body weight per day, divided across three or four small meals, mixed with a smaller amount of plain lean protein. Your vet may adjust that for your dog's size and situation.

Is white or brown rice better for loose stool?

White. The bran and germ in brown rice add fiber and work that an irritated gut does not need for a couple of days.

Can I give rice and chicken every day long term?

No. Rice and chicken is incomplete as a permanent diet and will fall short on several nutrients over weeks. If your dog needs long-term bland feeding, ask your veterinarian for a properly formulated option.

Can puppies have rice for loose stool?

Puppies dehydrate quickly and lose ground fast, so a puppy with diarrhea belongs in a clinic rather than on a home bland diet. Rice may be part of what the vet recommends, but the call should be theirs.

Does rice cause constipation in dogs?

Large amounts of low-fiber food can leave stool dry and hard to pass, which is one more reason to keep the bland stretch short and get back to a complete diet quickly.
