Bentonite and kaolin are clays, and in a dog they work by adsorption: their charged mineral surfaces attract and hold onto molecules passing through the gut, then leave with the stool. That mechanism is genuinely useful for binding water and loose material, which is why kaolin has a long history in gastrointestinal products and why bentonite appears in mycotoxin binder claims. The same mechanism is the problem. A surface that grabs toxins also grabs nutrients and medications, without discriminating. Clays are binders. They are not cures, and the timing rules that follow from that distinction matter more than the dose.
What they actually are
Both are aluminosilicate clay minerals, meaning sheets of silicon, aluminum and oxygen with other elements tucked between the layers.
Kaolin is kaolinite, a stable, relatively non-swelling clay. It is the china clay of ceramics. Its structure is tight, its surface charge is modest, and its action in the gut is mainly mechanical: it holds water and coats.
Bentonite is dominated by montmorillonite, a smectite clay, and it behaves very differently. Bentonite swells dramatically in water, sometimes to many times its dry volume, and it carries a much larger charged surface area. Sodium bentonite swells more than calcium bentonite. That expanded surface is what gives bentonite its reputation as a binder, and it is also what makes it more consequential to feed casually.
Both are mined minerals. Purity is a real variable, since clay deposits can carry heavy metals including lead and arsenic. Only a product made for animal consumption, from a supplier that tests its lots, belongs anywhere near a dog bowl.
How they work
Adsorption is not absorption, and the difference is the whole story. Absorption means something is taken up into the body. Adsorption means a molecule sticks to a surface. Clay never enters the bloodstream in any meaningful quantity. It travels the length of the digestive tract with things stuck to it and exits.
Three effects follow.
The first is water binding. Both clays hold water within the gut lumen, which can help convert watery stool toward formed stool. Kaolin's historical use in anti-diarrheal products rests on this plus its coating action.
The second is molecular binding. Bentonite's charged layers attract polar and charged molecules, including certain mycotoxins, ammonia, and some bacterial products. The mycotoxin binding evidence is reasonably solid in livestock feed, where contaminated grain is a recognized production problem. Canine evidence for a clinical benefit is much weaker, and mostly inferred.
The third is the one that gets left out of the marketing. Clay binds nutrients and drugs by the same physics. Minerals, some vitamins, and a long list of orally administered medications can adsorb to clay and never reach the places they were meant to reach.
That is not a hypothetical. It is why any clay product needs to be separated in time from meals and, especially, from medication. Most guidance lands on giving clay at least two hours away from other oral products, and your veterinarian should set the actual interval for your dog's specific medications.
Where they fit in a dog's routine
Clays are situational tools with a short list of reasonable uses:
- Short-term stool firming in an otherwise healthy adult dog with mild, non-bloody loose stool and no other symptoms.
- Feed quality concerns where a mycotoxin binder has been recommended by a professional, which is far more common in production animals than in pet dogs.
- As part of a product formulated and dosed for dogs, rather than as a scoop from a bag intended for another purpose.
They fit badly in more places than they fit well. Clay is not a treatment for any diagnosed disease. It does not address the cause of diarrhea. It is a poor choice for daily long-term feeding, because the binding does not stop when the loose stool does, and a dog on clay for months is a dog whose mineral intake nobody is tracking. Detox framing around bentonite in particular runs well past the science and should be read as sales copy.

Which dogs should skip it
- Any dog on daily medication. Thyroid medication, antibiotics, anticonvulsants, heart medication and many others can bind to clay. This is the single most common way clay causes harm, by quietly reducing a drug's effect.
- Dogs with constipation or a suspected obstruction. A swelling mineral is the wrong direction, and bentonite in particular can worsen a hard, dry stool problem.
- Puppies and growing dogs. Growth depends on reliable mineral absorption, and clay is an unreliable neighbor for it.
- Pregnant and nursing dogs. Same reasoning, higher stakes.
- Dogs with kidney disease or any condition involving mineral balance. Clays alter mineral handling in ways that complicate a managed case.
- Dogs whose diarrhea is bloody, ongoing beyond a day or two, or paired with vomiting, fever or lethargy. That is a diagnostic problem, not a binding problem.
Talk this one through with the veterinarian who prescribes your dog's medications before you start, and ask specifically how many hours of separation your dog's drug list requires. If your dog is on nothing at all, the conversation is shorter, and it is still worth having.
